The 9th Season of 24 really got down to brass tonight, in its 4th episode, as all kinds of relationships coalesce and hit the fan. And significantly, the three most major players other than Jack are women, and that does not include Chloe.
Kate proves what we've been seeing in her since the beginning. She's the smartest of all the governmental operatives, including her superiors, and she comes to believe Jack and his warnings about a massive terrorist on London using U.S. missiles. She's daring, dynamic, and risks her life to save Jack in the best scene of this season so far, and what will go down as one of the best in the series, which is saying a lot. And just for good measure, she has the thumb drive that Jack was close to totally uploading to Chloe.
Audrey also rose to the occasion, when her father, President Heller, lamentably does not buy what Jack is telling him. Given his history with Jack, he should have, and his going with the conventional solution - take Jack into custody immediately, with the risk that Jack will be killed - I guess can be chalked up to his mental deterioration. And while we're the subject of men who are disappointing, we have Mark, predictably against Jack; Steve, who's weak and not too bright; and that commando leader bent on killing Jack (my only regret in this whole scene was that he wasn't killed by someone). But Audrey really shines when she tells Mark what's what, and she's clearly a much more powerful character than she was in her previous appearances on 24.
Meanwhile, there'a a powerful and awful woman running the bad guys and their plans to take out a lot of London. Margot shows herself to be right up there with the worst villains in the history of 24, not only eager to wipe out thousands of innocent people (because in her stated view, no one is innocent), but crush her daughter's hand with hammer as a way of making sure the guy who loves her does as he is supposed to, i.e., get those missiles raining down on London.
Season 9 is starting to look like one of the best seasons of 24, and I'm looking forward to more.
