House 7.16: Broken Hearts and their Repair

An excellent House 7.16 tonight, in which a bullfighter with a damaged heart serves as a physical parallel to House's heart, broken last week by Cuddy.

First, let me say that I think Cuddy was wrong to break up with House.  I know she had a harrowing near-death experience, but she of all people should have known what House was made of - his unreliability and his vulnerability - before she initiated their relationship at the end of last year.

Tonight, Wilson attempts - unsuccessfully, of course - to get her to go back to House, or at least re-initiate some kind of relationship.  She refuses, and eventually goes to see House only to oppose his diagnosis.   Martha also opposed it (she should be fired, if you ask me), but House, as almost always, was right.  As he tells Cuddy, he's the genius, and he's right.  More power to him in not shying away from his talent and brilliance.

Bur House has one more surprise in store for us.  After a few days and nights with luscious prostitutes, House stands on the balcony of his hotel room, and makes as it he intends to jump off.   He does - with Wilson, standing on the ground, in worse than shock.

But the joke's on Wilson and everyone who worried that House was taking his life.   His jump is into a swimming pool, from which he emerges with a big grin on his face.

He's not out of the woods just yet.  Cuddy's leaving did him real damage.  But he's off to a good start.

House 7.4: Mind Games

House and Cuddy continue to develop their relationship in episode 7.4 of House.   When Cuddy tells House that his continuing little games are keeping them from being totally close, he replies that she's still keeping a distance from him - not having him sleep over her home, keeping House a distance from her daughter.  The result at the end is House is having dinner with Cuddy and her daughter, an important step in the right direction for their relationship.

Meanwhile, House's case involves mind games of another kind.  Sometimes, when a patient is having hallucinations, it's because she's schizophrenic, and has gone off of her medications.   This a nice twist on the usual set-up on House, where a strange physical ailment can have mental repercussions.

House figures it out - is pushed in the direction of a mental source of the patient's problem - by a new woman on the team.  House doesn't like her as a replacement for Cameron.  Foreman doesn't like her as a replacement for Thirteen.   Understandable, and, in their opinion, Chase brought her in for the main purpose of "getting laid".  That's understandable, too.

And, in the end, that's just - and all - that Chase gets.  The new woman doc on the block quits the team.  And, since she has a policy of not going out with colleagues, she's now free to indulge her interest in Chase.   He's happy, she's happy, we the viewers are happy.

It's a rare episode of House in which so many people end up happy, but it's been that kind of happier season.

Bones Meets Peyton Place and Desperate Housewives in 5.4

Last week, Bones and Booth visited Amish country. Tonight's case - 5.4 - took the two, and us, to somewhere between Peyton Place and Desperate Housewives. Suburbia, that is, with all its lovemaking and murder.

We also get a good contest of anthropology vs. psychology, in Bones vs. Sweets' analyses of the human condition behind the crime. Best line of show: Bones wonders why Sweets can't just "show" his findings to her and Booth, rather than "sharing".

Booth's son Parker puts in an appearance, urging Booth to get a girlfriend, and, eventually (of course) wondering why Bones can't move into that role. Out of the mouths of babes, but Bones intelligently realizes that Parker is actually after something else.

And the rotating assistants serve up Vaziri, the devout Muslim, who turns out to speak English with no accent at all, though he's still devout. He also gives us a good explanation of how someone can have a deep faith in the Deity, and have a powerful commitment to science. He's in effect an alternative to Bones, and her passionate scientific atheism.

Bones continues to refresh and satisfy with its cocktail of science, style, wisdom, and humor.
