"Paul Levinson's It's Real Life is a page-turning exploration into that multiverse known as rock and roll. But it is much more than a marvelous adventure narrated by a master storyteller...it is also an exquisite meditation on the very nature of alternate history." -- Jack Dann, The Fiction Writer's Guide to Alternate History

Escape at Dannemora 5: Out

A perfect episode - #5 - of Escape at Dannemora last night.  Or, about as perfect as it can get for our two escapees: they escape.  And they love their first taste of freedom.

But Tilly doesn't show.  Which means Matt and Sweat lack her car.   This pitches them into a series of crucial decisions, which we'll see the effects of in the episodes ahead.

Knowing that the two don't make it puts us in the unique position of knowing that each option they consider and reject might have been better than the option that they choose.  Matt wants to steal a car and drive to Mexico.  Sweat points out that cars have "GPS these days," which means a stolen car can be easily traced.  But, maybe - despite that sound logic - had they stolen a car and driven as far as they could until daybreak, and then proceeded on foot, the two would have done better than proceeding on foot at the outset.

Back to Tilly: one weakness in the series, at this point, is it's not clear why she didn't stick to the plan.  Just about everything we've seen prior to this episode shows her infatuated with Matt and Sweat and eager to leave her earnest husband.   What got her to change her mind?  Presumably inner qualms she always had - but, if that was the decisive factor, we should have seen more evidence of that, at least some significant evidence of that, earlier in the narrative.

Here's an admission: were this a piece of fiction, I'd be rooting for the escapees.  But this is a docu-drama, which means these guys actually committed murder, which makes it difficult to be on their side, even if you're an inveterate ally of the underdog.

Well, I'm also an ally of good television, which EAD certainly is.   Which means I'll be back here next week with a new review.
