Continuing with my sneak preview reviews of Boardwalk Empire - this one of 4.3 - courtesy of screeners from Starpulse, guaranteed to be spoiler free, and to be followed this Sunday with a proper recap/review right after the episode has aired in New York City, just up the road from A.C.
We accompany Nucky on his visit to Florida - honey, sunny, and ... well, you get the rhyming picture, as his host, seeking Nucky's money, encouragingly tells him is all readily available. Nucky is no big fan of the sun, but he'll happily take just about everything else that rhymes. But Nucky proves to be a tough cookie when it comes to his investments. And, in fact, philosophies of money are one of central themes of this episode.
Meanwhile, up north, all kinds of interesting developments are being set in motion. Narcisse talks to Rothstein about a drug much stronger than alcohol, and Rothstein mentions the name of another legendary, colorful gangster, about whose life at least one excellent movie and one Broadway flop was later based. It should be fun to see him appear in BE.
And we get more of Richard's story, wherever exactly he is, with an especially satisfying scene with his sister.
Gillian also has her best segment so far, this season. She's a character who's always on the edge of becoming respectable - though she doesn't entirely want to. But even if she did, she's forever hampered by someone or something from her past popping up to interfere with her plans. Her prospects this season look better than usual, though, and she may have a chance of really breaking out and free before its over.
There's still no sign of one of the major characters in Boardwalk Empire - but we finally get indirect word of where she apparently is, and it's just where you'd expect.
Another strong, scenic episode, with an especially good Florida ambiance - nice to see after the demise of Magic City - and a perfect concluding song.
I'll talk more about this in my review after this episode airs on Sunday.
